Web3 is transforming careers for Filipinos—from everyday professionals finding new opportunities to executives leading innovation in the space.

Introducing Off The Chain

“Off The Chain” is a BitPinas interview series featuring Filipinos making an impact in web3—from community builders to decision makers shaping the industry’s future. (Also available in the newsletter. The series is published every Wednesday.)

One of them is Mommy Julie, who was featured in the Metaverse Filipino Workers (MFW) film—a documentary that highlighted how Filipinos are using web3 to build sustainable careers without leaving the country:

Metaverse Filipino Worker: Earning Online Without Leaving Home

In the film, Julie shared how she started as an Axie Infinity player during the pandemic, a game introduced to her by her daughter. What began as a simple pastime turned into a full career shift, leading her to a role at YGG. She also faced her fears, stepping onto the stage at a web3 job fair, proving how much web3 had changed her life.

Interview with Mommy Julie of YGG

Starting Her Web3 Journey

Michael Mislos, BitPinas: In the MFW film, you mentioned that you used to be very shy before joining web3. Can you tell us more about your life before this industry?

Mommy Julie, YGG: Hi, I’m Mommy Julie, and I started my web3 journey through Axie Infinity during its early days.

During the pandemic, my daughter was the first one to start playing Axie. She came to me and said, “Mom, look at this game! But it’s nosebleed (hard to understand).” At the time, we didn’t have work, and I saw that Axie was a big help financially. So I thought, “Why not try it too?”

I got into it, and Axie became my first web3 game.

My daughter and I started playing together—but there were funny moments. Sometimes, she would have an exam and couldn’t finish her in-game energy, so she would ask me, “Mom, can you play for me? Sayang ang SLP!”

That was how I got involved. And honestly, it really helped us a lot. Axie provided a way for us to buy groceries and daily needs.

From Gaming to a Web3 Career

Mislos: So Axie started as a bonding activity, but later, you found a career in web3. How did that happen?

Mommy Julie: Yes! After playing Axie, I saw an opportunity at YGG (Yield Guild Games) to become a Community Manager. I applied and started managing a community of 200+ scholars in Iloilo. That was my first web3 job—as an Axie Manager.

Later on, YGG opened a job opportunity for an Events Assistant. Since I wanted to explore more, I applied for it. Thankfully, I got hired! Now, I’ve been with YGG for three years.

From Corporate Job to Web3: A Big Shift

Before joining web3, did you ever imagine yourself working in gaming or blockchain?

Mommy Julie: Not at all! I came from the corporate world and worked there for 14 years. I never imagined myself in gaming or web3. I thought the only way to earn well was to stay in a traditional corporate job.

But now, I’ve experienced something I never thought was possible—time freedom.

As a mom, I used to struggle balancing work and home life. I had to wake up early, cook, prepare my child for school, then rush to work. Now, I still wake up early to do chores and prepare food, but the difference is—I can work from home while doing it!

That flexibility is something I never thought I could have before.

Gaming as a Bonding Experience

Mislos: It seems like web3 helped you bond more with your daughter. What was the most fun part of playing games together?

Mommy Julie: One of the best things we did was joining YGG’s GAP (Guild Advancement Program)—an incentivized gaming program.

Before bedtime, we would play together, and I would guide her. It wasn’t just about fun—it helped us connect more.

As a parent, if you understand and join your child’s interests, it makes conversations at home more engaging. Instead of just asking, “How was your day?”, you have something fun to talk about and bond over.

That’s something I want more parents to experience.

Overcoming Shyness to Become a Public Speaker

Julie aspires to the spotlight

Mislos: Before web3, you said you were too shy to even order at McDonald’s. Now, you speak at events! What changed? What was the turning point?

Mommy Julie: At YGG, I saw many content creators and public speakers, and I was inspired.

At first, I was terrified of speaking in front of people. But through small interviews and livestreams, I slowly got used to it.

Now, even though I still get nervous, I have way more confidence than before.

Encouraging More Parents to Explore Web3

Mislos: In YGG events, we see students, parents, even seniors attending. But not many moms or parents are active in web3. What advice would you give to parents who want to explore this industry?

Mommy Julie: I really encourage parents to explore web3 together with their kids.

When parents take an interest in their kids’ digital activities, it creates a stronger bond. Even during mealtimes, instead of just asking “How was school?”, you can actually talk about something they love.

That’s why I tell parents: “Don’t be afraid to learn!”

Web3 is not just about games—there are many opportunities here.

Next Steps & Future Goals

Mislos: Now that you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone, what’s next for you?

Mommy Julie: I want to continue encouraging parents to explore digital skills with their kids. I also dream of organizing a “Mom Tournament”, where moms play games together!

As for content creation—I’m not a full-time content creator, but I do it as a side hustle.

Mislos: That’s actually a great approach– instead of jumping in full-time, people can start web3 as a side hustle first. Any final words for our audience?

Mommy Julie: Explore web3! There are so many opportunities beyond gaming—learn, upskill, and find what works for you.

Final Thoughts

Mommy Julie’s story is proof of how web3 is creating new opportunities for Filipinos—offering not just income, but time, flexibility, and personal growth.

Her journey—from a corporate job to web3 professional—shows that success in this space isn’t just for tech experts or early adopters. Anyone willing to learn can find their place.

With the Metaverse Filipino Worker (MFW) Caravan kicking off this April in Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Bicol, Iloilo, and Manila, more Filipinos will get the chance to explore new possibilities.

Stay tuned for the next “Off The Chain” feature as we continue highlighting Filipinos shaping the qeb3 space.
